| While films by Asian and Asian-American filmmakers have found success among U.S. audiences, Filipino and Filipino-American cinema has gone largely unseen in the mainstream. This is surpising, considering that there are almost two million U.S. citizens and residents of Filipino descent, a group that is second only to Chinese as the largest Asian population in the United States. In an era of globalized media and entertainment, international cinema has flourished. Filipino filmmakers have emerged on the international festival scene to earn tremendous acclaim. While Filipino filmmakers claim their rightful place in a global cinema, and Filipino-Americans carve out a cinema of their own, can mainstream acceptance in the U.S. market be too far behind? There's two million Filipinos and Filipino-Americans in this country who can do something about that.
